Cole planned a little fall date. That’s what he called it, like it wasn’t going to change my life. We walked through golden trees, pretending we weren’t both excited, pretending I wasn’t already smiling too much.
At one point he leaned in close and I thought he was just being sweet, until he paused and whispered, “I need you to remember this exact feeling.” That was the moment my stomach flipped.
Later, when the light turned soft and warm, he took my hand like he was steadying himself. The ring looked almost unreal against the autumn colors, bright, clean, and so me it hurt.
I didn’t say anything clever. I just laughed, nodded, and let him pull me in like the answer had been waiting all along.
